CORE 1 COURSE
SEWING FUNDAMENTALS: An Introduction to Machine Sewing

This class focuses on the basics of machine sewing — threading, bobbins and straight stitching. Other skills to be taught: how to properly cut fabric, set a sleeve and read a pattern. Plus, seam finishes including Hong Kong, French, seam binding, serger, overlock, pinking and flat-felled; and zippers, exposed, lapped and invisible. First projects: Sew a hoodie. Begin to build sample book.

CORE 2 COURSE
SEW IMPROVED: Buttons, Pockets, Stretchy Fabrics and More

In this second course, students will continue to learn their way around a sewing machine through more complex projects. New sewing techniques to be taught —, buttonholes, pockets, elastics, and working with stretchy fabrics. Students will learn the importance of following grainlines and how to properly measure their bodies. Projects: Sweatpants and T-shirt. Continue sample book.

CORE 3 COURSE
REDUCE, REUSE, UPCYCLE: Fashion and Environmental Damage

An important consideration in textile arts is the environmental impact of apparel manufacturing. “Fast Fashion,” has been coined to describe the trend of giant companies selling low-cost fashionable garments. In this course we will spend time discussing our role as consumers and producers, learning ways to be more responsible and reduce our footprint on the planet. Projects: Upcycling, reusing and repurposing clothes and other textiles to create new garments that express each student’s style and creativity.

CORE 4 COURSE
FASHION-TECH MAKER LAB: Exploration, Inspiration, Imagination

In Core 4, students will get to learn about and experiment with some of the coolest technologies and trends in the fashion industry — 3D printed fabric, buttons and fasteners. Other topics to be covered include dyes, sublimation (the process of using heat to transfer dye to fabric), embellishments, custom textiles, plus expressing your style through branding, design, colors, and logos.

CORE 5 COURSE
THAT’S SEW MY STYLE!:  Run-Up to the Runway

In Core 5, students will learn about creating their own fashion lines and will complete one final show-stopper piece. In doing so, students will demonstrate competency in machine sewing and use of essential tools and skills learned from previous courses to complete the project. This course will also explore one of the latest technological advancements in the garment industry — Ditto. Ditto is an amazing innovation making it possible to adapt body measurements to a library of digital patterns. We will project the customized pattern onto fabric — ready to cut and sew! Students will have plenty of open lab time to work on their projects and each day will be provided with guided activities to spark their creativity and inspire their inner “maker.”
